If they did have two charging ports, this is the only way I'd consider it to be a benefit. A full-featured NACS port plus a J1772 port would have real value. But not a J1772 with a gimped NACS port.
To my knowledge, every vehicle with this setup today has it to avoid the cost of implementing...
Many public Level 2 EVSEs you might encounter are NACS. Every single hotel I have ever been to has had a Tesla wall connector. The few hotels I have been to with J1772 it has been in disrepair and non-operational.
I maintain that not being able to do AC on the NACS port is a huge anti-feature...
You don't want this. This is an anti-feature. The J1772 can't do CCS (DCFC), only AC charging. More importantly, the NACS side can't do AC charging - it can only do DC charging.
Got it - so it's more of a limitation of the power output of the onboard AC inverter? That would make more sense to me - the battery should be more than capable, but the inverter is probably a bottleneck. My EV6 can't do more than 120v 16A due to the inverter, so it's not usable as a home backup.
Can you elaborate on this? Under acceleration, my EV6 pulls north of 200kW. Thats about 10x more the peak inrush power needed to start a home AC compressor.
I don't doubt it. 800V components still seem expensive, at least in North America. Many Chinese EVs are on high voltage systems now, so I imagine things are a bit different over there. Would have been nice if Ford could have figured out the split pack thing and had the best of both worlds...
I wonder how much added weight is caused by the 400v wiring vs 800v. Lower voltage = higher amperage = needs thicker wiring.
Edit: To sorta answer my own question, it is documented that Porsche saved approximately 66lbs of weight by using 800V architecture instead of 400V.
DC fast charging speed is what's going to make or break my purchase decision on this. I like everything else I've heard, but the Fathom will need to do 10-80% in 25 minutes or less on the big (300+mi) battery option for me to pull the trigger. On a small ~200mi range battery it would need to be...
That's the conventional wisdom, but the EGMP vehicles with 220kW+ charging speeds seem to be doing just fine for battery longevity despite charging at ~3C. I think the concern is overblown
Based on your summary that's a lot less than what I expected based on the prior articles about it. https://fordauthority.com/2026/06/ford-universal-ev-platform-designed-for-efficient-charging/ - it is stated that it would have added another 20% to the cost of the project.
Personally, my...
They did answer that part in an earlier article - it was a cost thing. They said it would have raised cost roughly 20%. Though I don't really understand how it would make the entire vehicle that much more expensive if they just did a split pack or something.
I do a lot of 10-20 hour drives. To me, a 35-40 minute charging time is a lot more irritating than a 15-20 minute charging time. 15-20 minutes is the perfect amount of time for me to go into a Sheetz, use the restroom, grab a quick bite, and be done in time to be on the road again. Over a...
I hate the answer to the megawatt charging question (actually I hate the question too, it was a dumb question). We all know it's going to be 400V and it's not going to have that. But will it charge faster than most other 400V vehicles, like the Rivian R2? Or is it going to be glacially slow...
40k+ OTD yeah for sure, but for an apples to apples comparison that's also the case for the Maverick and other "cheap" vehicles too. Dealerships have gotten incredibly greedy with doc fees in my area too and our sales tax is even higher (TN, 7% + $80).
I personally hate any kind of electronic door handle. I don't want any system that is reliant on some electronic motor to open the door or to allow me to use the handle. I don't mind my EV6 flush mounted door handles because at least they're still fully mechanical - I'd hate them if they were...
X Plan rules have changed in the past few years. The doc fee cap is now all the way up to $300 and there is also a $375 admin fee. Still beats the $800+ average doc fee around here.
The dealerships around me suck and aren't going to give anyone anything close to below invoice, and definitely...
The price for the EV3 GT-Line is about where I expect a fully loaded Fathom to land, but I'd never consider an EV3 due to the 31+ minute 10-80% charge time. That's a hard pass from me - in 2026/2027 we should expect better charging speeds than that.
Hopefully Ford can do much better than that...
That's quite shocking. My EV6 gets 3.5mi/kWh at 65mph even on hilly freeways. Even driving in sport mode at 85+ mph and going up in elevation over the trip, I've never gotten below 2.5.
I agree 1000%. Large wheels with low profile tires are worse for EV range and hurt ride quality. They exist solely for appearance and I want nothing to do with them.
Honestly, for people that do a lot of longer drives (me), both things are important. Range is the difference between stopping every 90 minutes vs stopping every 120 minutes. Charging speed is the difference between those stops being 15-25 minutes vs 30-40 minutes.
Range matters: 200 miles of...
