Well ... at $28,350, that leaves $1,650 for delivery and “dealer doc fees” to make it under $30,000 (if even a dollar) … for something assembled in America, so for many places, not all that much to ship !

If Ford was SMART … they’d offer FACTORY delivery … come spend ½ day, Factory Tour, get intro … shown how to operate your NEW Fatom … all set-up, phones connected, setting as you like, a lunch, and then you DRIVE HOME in your NEW Fatom.

Morning and afternoon sessions ...

Delivery … next to ‘nothing’ … NO trucking, transporting the vehicle !

======

In 1965, Ford made 628,000 (approx, as I recall) Mustangs. They were EVERYWHERE.

If handled correctly, able to "ramp-up" to hundreds of thousands/year as per demand ... there would be a Fathom in just about every garage, driveway, and (as the Gen-Zs do it) parked on the street.

=====

How the Factory Delivery needs to work ...

Besides NEXT to NO "delivery costs" (for Ford) and a few "educated" peeps showing the buyers at the factory TOUR, then a theater-room movies/all-about the FATHOM/etc. ... then it is YOUR (time slot) of "meet your Fathom" (driven up to the buyer at the delivery station(s) ... ) and then a "go through the features, get them all set-up ... and then a drive around a "closed circuit" to get familiar (nothing of speed ... just a little circuit of, say a stop sign/light, a few up to some speed (35 mph) and braking, some S-bends ... at the factory ... and then ... off they go.
Goodie bag and of course .. as Mercedes and Porsche (et al) do it ... the extensive Gift Shop ... .

IF a "drive around a course" in one's new Fathom isn't realistic (due to insurance, risks, etc) then the use of "program vehicles" will suffice ... as Ford did/does at the racing and off-road "schools" ... it is a 'cost of doing business' and is all rewarded in terms of NEW Vehicle Sales.

Purchases are handled via one's chosen local dealer, so registration, proof-of insurance, etc as per State requirements ... all set-up in advance. Yes, some DEALER education will be REQUIRED as we've ALL had the "bad dealer" experiences. Can't have that ! NO ... are YOU listening FORD ?!

Local Hotels and such all making money as new FORD buyers come into town EVERY DAY.

Is FORD Listening ??

Here's a good summary of the Fathom pickup by @Kamuelaflyer at Macheforum:

What Ford Announced

Confirmed Information
  • Name: Ford Fathom.
  • Platform: First production vehicle built on Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform.
  • Manufacturing: First vehicle produced using Ford’s new Assembly Tree manufacturing process.
  • Starting Price: $28,350 with the standard-range battery.
  • Interior: More passenger space than a Toyota RAV4.
  • Cargo: Front trunk (frunk) plus pickup bed.
  • Technology: Every Fathom is BlueCruise-capable.
  • Technology: Phone as a Key.
  • Technology: Bi-directional power capability.
  • Infotainment: 15.4-inch center display.
  • Reservations: Early 2027.
  • Customer Deliveries: Beginning fall 2027.
Reasonable Inferences

These are not confirmed by Ford but are strongly suggested by the announcement.
  • Extended-Range Battery – Referring specifically to a “standard-range battery” strongly suggests another battery option.
  • BlueCruise Hardware Standardization – BlueCruise capability on every Fathom suggests the required hardware is installed across the lineup, even if the service itself may remain optional.
  • Manufacturing Cost Reduction Is Central – The aggressive starting price appears to be enabled by the UEV platform, Assembly Tree manufacturing, and other engineering changes first discussed during the April EVDC tour rather than by simply deleting features.
  • Software-Defined Vehicle Philosophy – Standard hardware combined with software-enabled features is consistent with Ford’s new zonal architecture and simplified electrical system.l
Biggest Remaining Questions
  • Battery capacities – Standard Range and presumed Extended Range specifications.
  • EPA range – Perhaps the single most anticipated specification.
  • Charging performance – Peak DC fast charging power and charging curve.
  • Battery chemistry – Not yet publicly confirmed.
  • Drivetrain choices – RWD, AWD, or both.
  • Power and torque – Performance specifications remain unknown.
  • Towing and payload – Essential specifications for a pickup.
  • Bed dimensions – Length, width, and overall utility.
  • Frunk capacity – Practical storage volume.
  • 12-volt or 48-volt low-voltage architecture – An important engineering detail.
  • Charge-port location – Particularly relevant for owners who tow trailers.
  • Trim structure and options – Equipment differences between models.
  • Extended Range pricing – Cost of stepping up from the base model.
  • Destination charge – Needed to determine true entry price.
  • Model year – Deliveries begin in fall 2027, but Ford has not yet indicated whether Fathom will be sold as a 2027 or 2028 model.

At that price it looks like standard range will be around 210 miles. I wonder what the extended range will be and how it pans out on the highway.

The biggest thing for me right now is self driving on the interstate. Love the blue cruise will be standard and all will be ready for L3.

For Focus RS buyers, we all got a day at the Ford Racing School ... at a 'cost' and may added the Mustang Racing School (at a cost). Plenty of aspects to 'reward one for buying the RS (and other performance cars) ...

so, as the 'europeans do' ... WHY can't FORD offer FACTORY delivery ?

Such BUILDS "excitement" and another REASON to BUY the Fathom.

NOT hard to set such a deal UP ... and process THOUSANDS of BUYERS ... .

+++

Can't come pick-up you new Fathom ??

Ok, but a "certificate" at attend a 'regional' deal ... once you have taken delivery of your NEW Fathom.

=====

As Ferrari and Porsche leaned YEARS ago (but NOT Lotus) ... they have to HAVE EVENTS for the buyers. As ford did/does with the "performance" vehicles.

=====

Next time in Germany, go take a mercedes factory TOUR, and WITNESS the 'factory delivery' deal.

There is NO reason why FORD can't do this ...

and ... as those model come along ... Lincoln versions of said platforms.

You are correct. We always aim to report prices with the destination fee. If the price we are reporting does not include the destination fee, we will make a note of that in the story. In the case of the Fathom, Ford lists the MSRP at $28,350, with a $1595 destination fee.

Items for, at least, on the upper trim-levels

1. electrochroamatic (auto dimming) out-side mirrors (the Honda Ridgeline has this, standard !)
as a "low vehicle" the BRIGHT LED headlight today ... DEMAND dimming mirrors (outside) as well are inside.

2. heated steering wheel. Once you have one, you'll NEVER buy any vehicle without it.

3. Ventilated seats. My 2003 Lincoln LS had the Peltier-device heated and cooled seats. That was expensive ... so now a days they just pump-air ... fine. BUT, has to be 'available" on the upper trim levels.

4. The 'patented' (did you see that a few years ago) ... truck-bed to cabin "pass-through" so longer items can be place in the bed ... and into the rear cabin, seats folded down. OK, a 'cost' that the base doesn't have to have ...

5. High-end 'cloth' seats ... as an option. Leather and the poly-leather can be HOT ... and cold (before seats heat up) ... whereas nice higher-end cloth seats are NICE. Needs to be an OPTION.

6. BLACK rood DELETE ... on any "black package" ... as many of us HATE the BLACK roofs. Besides, BLACK get extremely HOT (you can butter-up and fry bacon and eggs on it) so for hot climates, must have the "Black Roof DELETE" option. Besides, saves FORD money in the 'paint shop'

7. Leather steering wheel. No PU-leather. ... at least on the upper trim levels.

8. Outside "welcome lights" ... aka "puddle lights" ...

9. GOOD COLORS ... BRIGHT and 'elegant' colors. Colors that are SO GOOD, peeps will BUY the Fathom just for the COLORS ... exterior and interior.

10. A no sun/moon roof option.

=======

Has to have the AWD option

Needed for anyone who lives or dives in SNOW, mountains, etc.

Happy to see Ford themselves posting in this thread and on the forum.

I'm excited that they've released some more info, but always wish it was more. Excited about this vehicle.

Hoping Ford will extend my F-150 Lightning lease roughly 6 months so that I can keep it before delivery of a Fathom

I (and most) am NOT looking for any TOW with a BEV (Battery Electric vehicle).

Pure physics ...to move a mass at speed ... duration, and "against" gravity (hills/mountains) and 'air' (fluid dynamics) ... needs ENERGY that no battery can deliver.

When 'towing' all dinosaur-juice vehicles drop their MPG (miles per gallon) and as speed and hills increase, the gas/diesel needed really increases.

NOT until a TRUE Solid-State battery is perfected and the price comes-down will anyone be 'towing' with a BEV ... far, heavy, etc. Nope ... isn't going to happen.

======

BUT, what IS needed is ... AWD.

I have reserved and ordered: F150 Lightning & Mach E which I took delivery of.

Can't wait for the Fathom reservation phase!

Now, I have to tell the wife that I am going to lose the $300 deposit at Slate Automotive...😪

Let's go!!!!!!

We need battery size and range specs ASAP. Gotta' have 250 miles of range minimum to be legit in today's world. And I don't want to have to pay an additional $10,000 to get that range via an "extended range" battery. C'mon Ford....this has so much potential to be excellent.
