Given your expertise, what will the response of the insurance companies be to the megacasting construction of the Fathom?

Ford designed the Unicastings on the Fathom to be repairable without being entirely replaced.

They have cut lines on the Unicastings and the area to be repaired is cut and the replaced piece is attached with adhesives and fasteners.

Ford has decades of crash information and repair/insurance experience to work with. Without giving away the entire secret sauce, we can say that we are confident we will not have repairability issues.

The team is obsessively reducing cycle time of the unicastings for efficiency. Each unicasting goes through rigorous quality checks before leaving for Louisville Assembly Plant as it moves towards the launch next year. Ford’s unicastings have been specifically engineered for modular repairability.

What have you done to improve the repairability of castings in the event of a crash?
Vladimir Bogachuk: Repairability has been a key factor in our decision-making from the start of the UEV program. This involved engaging with insurance companies and our experienced repair team early and extensively to learn from prior programs and to establish repair procedures.

We designed the vehicle to localize damage to specific areas for low and moderate-speed collisions - the most common incidents on the road today. Although our unicastings are single structures, they are designed to be modular for repairability.

We are accomplishing this with predefined cut zones to decrease variability in repairs. Early results indicate that our unicasting repairs can be cost and time-competitive with conventional repairs
