Tim: You will be surprised (in a good way) how cheap it will be for the ER battery

One way I've always looked at this is: if I'm buying a gasoline or diesel truck, would I pay $5,000 to get a fuel tank that's 3 gallons larger? The obvious answer is absolutely not.

And so, it is a bit of a curiosity that when the powertrain changes to electric, people are immediately willing to do so. Maybe that comes from the fact that, traditionally, it's just been much harder to find public charging stations, but that issue is sort of going away in today's world.

It’s less about charger availability and more about charging time. Sub-300 mile range would be ok if I could gain 150-200 miles of highway driving in 5 minutes instead of 30. I’m good to stop for 5 minutes every 2-3 hours, I don’t want to stop for 30 minutes, which is what most cars require. Even my EV6 takes a 20 minute break for another 2 hours of driving.

Ford needs to offer three options: SR, ER, and RE.
SR = Standard battery
ER = Larger battery
RE = Standard battery with a small range-extender generator where the frunk sits.
That Range Extender option is a pipe Dream. You'll have better luck with the Maverick becoming a Plug-In Hybrid.

I was thinking about this a lot on my last road trip. 200 miles at at highway speeds (~70 mph) is nearly three hours of driving. At that point I WANT to take a 30 minute stop even if I don't NEED to. I'm realizing if I'm intentional about my stops, I might not even notice the extra time commitment of road-tripping in an EV. So my ask on EV range is 200 miles plus a very wide margin of error and the ability to replenish those 200 miles in roughly 30 minutes. Bolt and Leaf pretty much have that at the same price point as Fathom. So I'm hoping for the same or better form Ford.

Agree. Talked to local Autonation Ford Sales Manager this PM. MSRP will be the price for orders. The only model getting front loads are the 150 Raptors. No one was at the dealership this PM.

70 mph on the highway. You get run over driving that fast on a Florida interstate.

I believe ER Battery and AWD will be the only factory options (along with paint color) that will be offered as the base Fantom is already pretty loaded.

There may be some dealer installed products also available.

I like ER and AWD at $5,000 additional cost mentioned above.
If that is true, I'd jump on it.

But based on my past 2 Ford EV purchases - it's bound to be more $$$.

Ya!

I drove in FL during a trip to Orlando & Fort Lauderdale and Floridians drive like crazy!

Tailgating is the norm at high speeds - scared the heck out of me and traumatized me forever.

Everytime I see the occasional tailgater behind me in Southern California, I assume they are from FL !

Different use cases and needs for different people. I see what you are saying, but the extra miles matter to me (as well as the likely increased charge time efficiency) because I drive long distances in the non-California western US, where chargers are more abundant than they used to be but are not always super well spaced for charger hopping. I'm definitely getting the ER.

If the Fathom isn't perfect for me, I'll just stick around and see what else Ford delivers on the UEV platform. I'm 99.9% sure the platform is awesome for me, partly just because I'm an engineering geek - and the engineering of the UEV platform rocks (well, I think it rocks - tbd).
