I never worry about BEV battery longevity. There is a USA federal regulation governing battery warranties. I won't own any BEV that long.

Most manufacturers offer warranties that last eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Beginning with the 2027 model year, the EPA will require the high-voltage battery systems in EVs and PHEVs to carry an eight-year/80,000-mile warranty

I think your inside source is just making things up.

How the heck can the Fathom get only 200 miles range when Slate gets 205 mile range with their boxy EV truck.

The Fathom gets 50 more miles range just from Aero design improvements.

Also no way will the extended range pack be less than 300 miles and more likely 350+ miles.
You're assuming the entry level slate and fathom use the same size battery. What if the entry level fathom uses a smaller battery than slate but gets similar range as a result of better aero?

200 mile range for 30k would be a huge disappointment. Nissan Leaf has 300 miles range for 30k. The Bolt has 262 for the same price as the Fathom. The Chevrolet equinox has 319 miles range for 37k. If those price and range rumors are true, there are numerous ev’s that have better range and price than the Fathom and they didn’t have to invent a whole new assembly line process to do it.
It's Borg, you know the reputation BORG has so we'll see if it's accurate. I agree it's a little low.

I’ve always thought Borg was more right than wrong and enjoy his info. But what he said about the range does line up with the guy from the focus group too. I’d still take it with a grain of salt, but I’d guess there’s some truth there.

I had a F-150 Lightning up until February of this year. We can agree to disagree.

Range absolutely matters!

And, there are only so many charge cycles a battery can withstand. So from an engineering standpoint, more range means a longer lasting vehicle.

Agreed. 200 is a little low for standard. 200 in the bare minimum for optics, and I’d expect more like 210-230.

300 on extended range would be a massive disappointment. 280 would be a joke in 2027. Base model 200-300 is fine, but no one should use the words ‘extended range’ with anything less than 350 on a new model.

Riley, good to see you reading and replying. It shows you care. Consider the CATL high end battery formulation replacing the FLP iron based formulation.
It's good to be here! Thanks for welcoming me.

While I can't comment on speculation and figures - what I will say is that the team is still going through testing, and there is a whole process with EPA for range figures (same as any vehicle and any manufacturer). So there isn't anything to actually share on this right now.

Good job to team Fathom for actually coming through with a $30k truck!

All manufactures, please bring back stake pockets in the future, especially for small beds. Tiedowns and rails are useless for yard waste.

Understand this is more cost so I'm fine if the standard bed only came with 4 cutouts ontop of the rails and the actual stake holders under the bed rails was a dealer bolt on option.

Please share with the team. Thank you.

I'm going to share this with the team.

@rileyfromford would love to eventually hear if the Fathom’s cameras will record like a Tesla’s does, thereby negating the need to install aftermarket dash cams.

I for one would love it - coming from the Lightning.

It was a beast to handle around congested Los Angeles traffic, tight parking spaces and awful U turn radius.

Would not fit in my single car garage (unless I moved the refrigerator which my wife did not like).

Never used the Lightning for any truck stuff - never hauled - never towed - was a daily commuter vehicle.

Traded in the 2022 Lightning a year later for more money than I paid for plus $7500 tax credit on top and got my current Mach E.

Fathom would be the perfect marriage EV (Lightning & Mach E) - smaller size, lower to the ground for my aging body, ample cabin size, plus a truck bed which I never would use.
Well, like you said, the Lightning isnt for you but for others that want a traditional full sized truck, the Fathom lacks.

I'll maintain that max miles is a crappy metric to look at (as long as its' ~200 or greater).
...
If you do a LOT of longer drives, level-3 charging capability is also going to come into play. Hoping the Fathom comes in at 150kW or better.
Honestly, for people that do a lot of longer drives (me), both things are important. Range is the difference between stopping every 90 minutes vs stopping every 120 minutes. Charging speed is the difference between those stops being 15-25 minutes vs 30-40 minutes.

Range matters: 200 miles of EPA range translates to 160 or less at typical freeway speeds of 75-80mph due to air resistance. And you're only really using 70% of the battery between stops on a long trip, because fast charging is from 10-80%. That means you'd get about 110 miles of driving between charging stops - about 90 minutes of driving at 75-80mph. A 300 mile EPA pack would mean closer to 170 miles of driving at those speeds in the 10-80% band, or a bit over 120 minutes. That's a big difference if you're on a 12 hour trip.

I am hoping for a bigger battery option that's at least around 300mi EPA range, and I am hoping for a 25 minute or shorter charging time from 10-80% on that battery. If they can get it to hold an average of 150kW throughout the charging curve from 10-80%, they can probably achieve that. The Slate was an instant no-buy from me due to the double whammy of short range and poor DC charging speeds.

Many of those Lightning buyers will love the Fathom, but some will still pine for something bigger, like a 3 row suv.
Chant it with me: Mi-ni-van, mi-ni-van! 😆

The Mach E is plenty of space for me. I have the 2024 with the big frunk instead of the heat pump, which was a deliberate choice. I can put a standard overhead roller bag in the frunk. True, there’s no third row.

One of my favorite vehicles was our Mazda 5. Weird, I know, but that thing was a marvel of packaging. It was the length of a Mazda 3, had a kid-usable 3rd row, pins to mount a roof rack, it took an accessory hitch, and had a super short hood. It lived in a city, its whole life parallel parked.

It was a slow boy getting up to 60, especially when loaded. It was tinny at speed. And nothing was powered, not the sliding doors or the hatch. But it existed for toddlers to puke 🤮 in and for its five star safety rating. I still miss it.

I know that for most of America, people would just buy a big three row minivan or SUV. We moved to a more suburban area and did just that. But now that my puking toddler is a new driver, I wish I had the Mazda 5 back. Small, slow to 60, maneuverable, she can throw all her crap in it…

I saw a LOT of this on the F-150 Lightning forum. Most users of that truck never hauled, towed, or worked with it. It always made me wonder why they got the Lightning to begin with, when there was a Mustang Mach-e on the same showroom floor that would have been more perfect for their needs.

The demographic on the Lightning forum is night and day different than the ICE F-150 forums. Interesting stuff.....
Agree - but at that time there were no "dealer stock" so I put in reservations for BOTH Lightning and Mach E.

Lightning order came up quickly - ordered in 2022 and a few months later showed up unexpectedly in July 2022.

I didn't expect to "win" the Lightning lottery and actually order one since the Mach E production was already out ahead of it.

Funny enough though, the Mach E took almost 2 years to materialize after changing model years ('22 to '23), changing color (no more ice blue), changed trim (no more Select w/ Tech & Comfort w/ ice white trim), and changed VIN after production due to train accident that totalled my original order.

Guess you can say I am a devout Ford customer after going thru that!

Loosing your order to a train derailment happens more often than one would think… Over at the Maverick forum were pictures of 5 derailed cars loaded with new Mavericks when they were hard to get. They were forklifting them into disposal bins… very sad to watch😢

Wow, didn't know it was common to have train derailments!

My derailment was featured in a photo with lots of Fords being taken off the train one by one using a forklift they punched thru the windshields and/or side glass windows to lift them out.

My dealer notified me that my order was totalled and that Ford was going to hotshot one to replace it so they had it sent by cargo ship which cut down on the rail journey from Mexico to California.

Guess that's why we all pay the "destination fees" for all cars - like insurance ?

A replacement order for a destroyed customer ordered vehicle usually gets a sub 10 priority code and goes right to the front of the production queue.
