People need to remember there are California sales tax complications for out of state buyers. You have to pay California sales tax unless the vehicle is shipped out of state by a third party. You should get a credit in your home state if you pick up and pay California sales tax, but if your local rate is lower then you eat the difference.

The reason Granger and Long-MacArthur are better for out of state buyers is their states offer transit permits with no sales tax. You pay the sales tax in your state upon registration. And their state titling systems support electronic signatures, no “wet” signature complications/costs.

Also need to remember that sometimes demand outpaces expectation when a new vehicle launches. We've seen that before. And when that happens, a lot of people will end up waiting for a long while to get one.

100% correct!

Out of state (outside CA) buyers will pay sales tax if they pick up at the CA dealer.
If it's shipped outside CA then no sales tax.

I am looking at doing the Long McArthur pickup in Salina, KS for the discount as well as a 60 day KS temporary tag.

Just found out that I have to register it with DMV within 20 days - don't know if the clock starts at the time of out of state pickup or when it enters CA.

Anyone know ?

No Idea what that'll look like, it's too far out.

California is more strict about it than most states, mainly because of widespread past abuses. There is a penalty, but it is modest for the first few months or so, mainly as an incentive to just get on with it. The effective date is upon entering California, which is somewhat difficult to establish with precision anyway. Here is their penalty fee list:
  • 1 to 10 days late: $10 fee
  • 11 to 30 days late: $15 fee
  • 31 days to 1 year late: $30 fee
  • 1 year to 2 years late: 40% penalty of the vehicle license fee/weight fee plus additional standard delinquency charges
  • More than 2 years late: Higher percentage penalties and accumulated back fees
At least the Fathom avoids the mandatory smog test!

Do I need an X-plan pin before ordering?
No. AXZD-Plan PINs are needed when you actually go to buy the vehicle, not order it. Meaning the vehicle is ordered by the dealer from the factory, built, delivered to the dealer, and you're signing the paperwork to buy it. You can wait until it has been built to generate a PIN.

PINs do expire after one year, keep that in mind.

Do make sure that any dealer you order through agrees in writing to accept X-Plan on your purchase. Dealers are allowed to choose whether to accept it. They can then provide X-Plan pricing details for your order.

Typically the direct selling dealers do 3% below invoice, but sometimes 4% or even 5% depending on models. All the usual Ford incentives, public and private, also apply, subject to the normal stacking rules.

Basically they just want to sell cars and we just want to buy them, so it’s a simple and efficient relationship without unnecessary overheads.

There are a few Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram dealerships doing this. One that comes to mind in particular is Gupton Motors just outside of Nashville. They hit up the forums heavily, and they will sell Jeeps at 5% below invoice no questions asked. You send them your order, pay a small deposit, when the Jeep arrives you drive or fly to Nashville area and pick it up. They do so much volume that it eliminates the need for high profit on each unit sold, AND it generates more return customers.

Edit: I just checked the JL Wrangler forum today and it looks like their deal now is 9% under invoice on any order! No add-ons. No B.S. Free transportation from the airport in Nashville to their dealership, then you drive your new vehicle home.

Guess that explains why every time I've been to their dealership they've had Jeeps lined up in front of the store with people picking them up all day long like a well oiled machine.

Looks like Long McArthur is committing to the same pricing as us, you're welcome to buy from either of course, but we can do all of the DMV/Documentation for you as we're a California based dealer.

All dealers are direct selling ;) As @FordVideoGuy already said, they're doing the same as us: MSRP and honoring AXZD plans for those that have PINs.

Happy to discuss the merits of other dealers for other brands, but please let's keep this discussion out of our thread.

Yes, I have been through this twice with Ford Mavericks purchased at Long McArthur Ford in Salina, Kansas. I am copying Tim @FordVideoGuy on this reply in case I say something incorrect.
  • I flew to Wichita, KS, and I made my own way to Salina, KS. Long McArthur will, however, arrange to pick you up from Wichita (or Kansas City). I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn since it is a nice place to stay. It is also within walking distance of the dealership, although my salesperson arranged for someone to pick me up.
  • The process of working with the finance person was straightforward.
  • I drove both Mavericks the 1,450 miles home.
  • You need to wait for Long McArthur to send the Ford Manufacturer's Statement of Origin (MSO).
  • Since this is an EV, you won't have to provide a valid smog certificate. Both Mavericks have internal combustion engines (ICEs) and need smog certificates.
  • I used a local AAA office for both transactions. They will have someone to do the verification inspection (Form 31).
  • The finance company will provide instructions on how to include them as a lienholder on the Title or Registration form REG 343, which is completed and signed as needed. Note that the purchase documents may include dealer add-ons that are factored into the financing, but they should not be included in the registration and sales tax figures. For example, do not include the warranty cost in the sale price determination. You might need to complete a Statement of Facts (REG 256?) to explain how the purchase price was determined.
  • Note that the Fathom is considered a commercial vehicle since it is a pickup with an open bed. This means you will need to provide a California public weightmaster's certificate. Ford supplies this value on the MSO. AAA/DMV accepts the value on the MSO.
I kept and shredded the Kansas temporary tags instead of turning them in.

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.
