5 years on I have had push button doors. On our 21 MachE they can be lazy at times requiring 2 pushes, on our 22 they are flawless. I do not want the return of door handles no more than I want a fuel tank. I would prefer only a button.

On the winter testing video I note no door handles, on the summer test there they are.... I hope Ford ops for no handles even if they do away with the plunger....

Maybe I missed something and this has been discussed but one would think a simple button and pull tab as on the MachE would be cheaper and more efficient than a complex pull handle.

I personally hate any kind of electronic door handle. I don't want any system that is reliant on some electronic motor to open the door or to allow me to use the handle. I don't mind my EV6 flush mounted door handles because at least they're still fully mechanical - I'd hate them if they were like Tesla handles.

There's a reason China banned electronic door handles. It makes it very difficult for someone to open the door from the outside after a crash.

Not sure how a manual lever attached to a cable is more complicated than a button attached to a computer attached to a motor attached to a cable. It's not like Ford never figured out how to open a door.

I'll voice the very exact opposite. The electronic door with no externally available backup option is terrible. Dealt with two cars this year with dead 12v and was so happy that I could pull out a keyblade and simply open the door.

Hasn't happened on my MachE yet, but dreading having to find a jump box to jump the hood just so I can remove some covers to jump the battery to open the doors... And that is if the "pop hood" jump logic agrees the battery is dead enough to open...

There is a lot I like about the mache, but the door opening scheme is a pretty bad idea.

We discussed in another thread, but the door handles are supposed to be similar to the mach e and the handles you see in the spy photos are fake. Guess we won’t know for sure until they show it to us.

I for one dont mind the mach e door handles, however I’d much rather have a mechanical handle for safety reasons.

I didn’t start this thread so don’t tread on me but….
I did get a chuckle out of the ‘complex pull handle’.

that just sounds like a classic oxymoron.

Thanks!

What happens in winter when the car is covered in snow and ice? You just walk to work? Use your phone to unlock the door?

I hope for real handles. The less electronic and computerized junk they put on this truck, the more reliable and long lasting and easy to repair it'll be.

Your description literally shows why it's more complicated. More connections, more moving parts, and pesky electrons to manage. Not everything needs to be reinvented and computerized.

No standard mechanical release is a major safety concern and a non starter for me.
I’m okay with mechanical handles that are presented electrically if you just need a worthless gizmo, like the ioniq, but prefer a simple, mechanical, flush handle with mechanical release inside and out.

anything needing voltage to open, inside or out, even with an emergency release hidden somewhere stupid, won’t do it for me.

A good discussion. I've owned or driven almost every EV aka used all the door handles. Immediate family has had 12 different EVs since 2022. We currently have a 2025 ME and 2022 Lightning in our house.

Best door handles IMO are the Hyundai Ioniq 5 flush handles. Out of the way but present automatically and will present manually in a 12V failure. Back end grab is much more intuitive than the stupid Tesla handles.

Coupled with a standard mechanical release inside makes it a perfect scenario for aero and looks.

I like my ev6 wind. Flush handles look nice, but they are fully mechanical. People that get into my car complain, but as an owner you get used to it quick.

I didn’t like the gt-line that automatically pop out when you get close or when it’s unlocked. It’s a signal to everyone that it’s your car and when it’s unlocked.

Electronics? My Mach-E's trunk release above the license plate is so balky that I press it once, nothing seems to happen, so I press it again, only to find that the first press did work, but it was apparently communicating to Mars and back. Because of the lag, it opened about 5% and stopped. Now I have to manually open it or close it electronically, only to have to open it again.

our Ioniq 6 has the auto pop out feature. Fortunately it can be (and is) disabled via the setup screen.
